1 Preamble

Many studies have shown that, statistically, the engine-room is the most dangerous area on a ship. An efficiently operated engine-room, with appropriately located controls for pumps, power and propulsion, is also vital for co-ordinated emergency response. Therefore, it stands to reason that a well-designed engine-room will be inherently safer and will consequently contribute to a higher overall safety standard.
