THE CONFERENCE,
HAVING ADOPTED the 1995 amendments to the International Convention
on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers
(STCW), 1978,
NOTING the lack of agreed international
standards of medical fitness for seafarers,
RECOGNIZING
the importance of the overall medical fitness of masters and ships'
crews to the safety of life and property at sea and the protection
of the marine environment,
TAKING COGNIZANCE OF the International
Labour Organization's conventions concerning the medical examination
of seafarers,
NOTING FURTHER that the International Labour
Organization and the World Health Organization are undertaking research
into existing medical examination requirements for seafarers on a
global basis,
INVITES the Organization, in co-operation
with the International Labour Organization and the World Health Organization,
to develop international standards of medical fitness for seafarers.
