3.4.1 Dust of some solid bulk cargoes may constitute
an explosion hazard, especially while loading, unloading and cleaning.
This risk can be minimized by ventilating to prevent the formation
of a dust-laden atmosphere and by hosing down rather than sweeping.
3.4.2 Some cargoes may emit flammable gases in sufficient
quantities to constitute a fire or explosion hazard. Where this is indicated in the
cargo schedule in this Code or by the cargo information provided by the shipper, the
cargo spaces shall be effectively ventilated as necessary. The atmosphere in the cargo
spaces shall be monitored by means of an appropriate gas detector. Due consideration
shall be given to the ventilation and monitoring of the atmosphere in the enclosed
spaces adjacent to the cargo spaces.
