4.1.1 The limits specified in this section shall
be regarded as maximum levels and not as desirable levels. Where reasonably
practicable, it is desirable for the noise level to be lower than
the maximum levels specified.
4.1.2 Before the ship is put in service, the limits
specified in section 4.2 shall be assessed by the equivalent continuous
sound level measurement for that space. In large rooms with many measurement
positions the individual positions shall be compared to the limits.
4.1.3 Personnel entering spaces with nominal noise
levels greater than 85 dB(A) should be required to wear hearing protectors
while in those spaces (see chapter
5). The limit of 110 dB(A) given in paragraph 4.2.1 assumes
that hearing protectors giving protection meeting the requirements
for hearing protectors in chapter
7 are worn.
