Section 2 Structural analysis

2.1 The Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Special Service Craft (hereinafter referred to as the Rules for Special Service Craft) provide scantling requirements for a basic structural configuration for both mono and multi-hull craft with multi-deck or single deck hulls which include a double bottom, or single bottom arrangement. The structural configuration may also include a single or multiple arrangement of cargo hatch openings. The Rules for Special Service Craft provide for both longitudinal and transverse framing systems. Alternative types of framing systems will be specially considered on the basis of the Rules for Special Service Craft.

2.2 Every effort has been taken to make the Rules for Special Service Craft scantling formulae as transparent as possible, and to achieve this objective the following approach has been adopted:

  • lay down requirements,
  • specify modelling considerations,
  • indicate limit states,
  • state constraints in an explicit manner.

2.3 This approach will enable the designers and Builders to decide for themselves the suitability of the Rules for Special Service Craft for their project. Further and perhaps more importantly changes may be easily made to the requirements based upon experience gained, discussions with interested parties and as development progresses. This is similar to the current Rule development process which is continually updating and 'tailoring' Rules requirements.
