7.2.1 Units should have sufficient power for going
astern to secure proper control of the unit in all normal circumstances.
7.2.2 The ability of the machinery to reverse
the direction of thrust of the propeller in sufficient time and so
to bring the unit to rest within a reasonable distance from maximum
ahead service speed should be demonstrated.
7.2.3 The stopping times, unit headings and distances
recorded on trials, together with the results of trials to determine
the ability of units having multiple propellers to navigate and manoeuvre
with one or more propellers inoperative, should be available on board
for the use of the master or other designated personnel.footnote
7.2.4 Where the unit is provided with supplementary
means for manoeuvring or stopping, these should be demonstrated and
recorded as referred to in paragraphs 7.2.2 and 7.2.3.
