1 General

1.1 Standard of material

1.1.1 Materials used during construction are to comply with the Rules for Materials of the Society.

1.1.2 Other materials than those covered under [1.1.1] may be accepted, provided their specification (e.g. manufacture, chemical composition, mechanical properties, welding) is submitted to the Society for approval.

1.2 Testing of materials

1.2.1 Materials are to be tested in compliance with the applicable requirements of Rules for Materials of the Society.

1.3 Manufacturing process

1.3.1 The requirements of this section presume that welding and other cold or hot manufacturing processes are carried out in compliance with current sound working practice defined in the Rules and/or documents of the individual Society which incorporate IACS UR W and the applicable requirements of Rules for Materials of the Society.

In particular:

  • Parent material and welding processes are to be within the limits stated for the specified type of material for which they are intended.
  • Specific preheating may be required before welding.
  • Welding or other cold or hot manufacturing processes may need to be followed by an adequate heat treatment.
