2 Languages

  2.1 Posted instructions should make maximum possible use of symbols and diagrams in order to minimise “wordiness" and in order to convey essential instructions to passengers regardless of language skills.

  2.2 Posted or other printer information, as well as announcements, should be in languages likely to be understood by all persons of nationalities normally using the service. This will normally be the languages of the port States, but on route where a variety of “international" passengers are often carried, English should be included as one of the languages. Common words should generally be used instead of nautical terms.

  2.3 Crew members assigned to direct and assist passengers in an emergency should be able to communicate with passengers in the language or languages appropriate to the principal nationalities of passengers carried on the particular route. If necessary, crew members can be teamed in order to provide the necessary language skills. They may also be trained in basic commands in languages other than their native language, and in non-verbal communications.
