Given the differences in laws of the many jurisdictions
where a ship may sail, it is not practical to provide a comprehensive
list of the types and legal definitions of serious crimes that require
reporting. Generally, the master should report alleged or discovered
serious crimes to the flag State, other interested States and parties
involved, including law-enforcement authorities. These could include,
but are not limited to, a suspicious death or disappearance, a criminal
act leading to serious bodily injury, sexual assault, conduct endangering
the safety of the vessel, or substantial loss of currency or property.
