29.2.4 Use of Antifouling Paints

29.2.4.1 On the 5th October 2001 the International Maritime Organization adopted the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships. This Convention prohibits the use of environmentally harmful organotins (for example Tributyl Tin) in antifouling paints applied on ships and prevents the possible use in the future of other harmful substances in anti-fouling systems.

29.2.4.2 The application of Organotin compounds has been prohibited since 1st January 2003 and they will be completely banned from 1st January 2008. An EU regulation on The Prohibition of Organotin compounds on Ships (EC 782/2003) has been developed and the UK is in the process of drafting legislation to bring the provisions of the Convention and Regulation into effect which should be in place during 2005. For ships less than 24 metres in length it is not necessary to provide for a specific survey or declaration.
