Regulation 10 - Lifebuoys

  (1) At least the following number of lifebuoys complying with the requirements of regulation 27(1) shall be provided:

  • (a) eight lifebuoys in vessels of 75 m in length and over;

  • (b) six lifebuoys in vessels of less than 75 m in length.

  (2) At least half of the number of lifebuoys referred to in paragraph (I) shall be provided with self-igniting lights complying with the requirements of regulation 27(2).

  (3) At least two of the lifebuoys provided with self-igniting lights in accordance with paragraph (2) shall be provided with self-activating smoke signals complying with the requirements of regulation 27(3), and shall, where practicable, be capable of quick release from the navigating bridge.

  (4) At least one lifebuoy on each side of the vessel shall be fitted with a buoyant lifeline complying with the requirements of regulation 27(4) equal in length to not less than twice the height at which it is stowed above the waterline in the lightest seagoing condition, or 30 m, whichever is greater. Such lifebuoys shall not have self-igniting lights.

  (5) An lifebuoys shall be so placed as to be readily accessible to the persons on board and shall always be capable of being rapidly cast loose and shall not be permanently secured in any way.
