2 Field of Application

The test method is applicable for water-based fire-extinguishing systems which will be used as alternative fire-extinguishing systems as required by SOLAS regulation II-2/10.4.1 and II-2/10.9.1. For the installation of the system, nozzles shall be installed to protect the entire hazard volume (total flooding). The installation specification provided by the manufacturer should include maximum horizontal and vertical nozzle spacing, maximum enclosure height, and distance of nozzles below the ceiling and maximum enclosure volume which, as a principle, should not exceed the values used in approval fire test. However, when based on the scientific methods developed by the Organizationfootnote, scaling from the maximum tested volume to a larger volume may be permitted. The scaling should not exceed twice the tested volume.
