1.1 This document serves three purposes:
- To give an introduction to the purpose of classification and the
way it is implemented for naval ships, for the benefit of those who
are not familiar with the classification concept and process.
- To indicate to builders and repair yards what the LR Surveyor
will be looking for, and how aspects of a survey of a naval ship will
be considered.
- To guide LR Surveyors in conducting classification surveys on
naval ships.
1.2 The document is divided into chapters,
which follow the sequence of acquiring a ship, supervising the building
to class, surveying through life, and dealing with the types of deficiencies
that may be encountered.
1.3 It should be read in conjunction
with LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification
of Naval Ships (hereinafter referred to as the Rules for Naval
Ships), as there is very little duplication of information.
1.4 The technical chapters assume a fundamental
knowledge of ship structures and shipbuilding/ship repair practice.
The deficiencies shown are generic and should be taken as examples
only. Where subjects are not addressed, it is assumed that the current
processes for commercial ships are adopted.
1.5 This document does not address matters
related to Machinery Naval Class or items associated with machinery
and engineering systems class notations.
