Circular

  1 MEPC 49 (14 to 18 July 2003) adopted, by resolution MEPC.107(49), the revised Guidelines and specifications for pollution prevention equipment for machinery space bilges of ships and, by resolution MEPC.108(49), the revised Guidelines and specifications for oil discharge monitoring and control systems for oil tankers. Both revised Guidelines are expected to take effect from 1 January 2005.

  2 MEPC 52 (11 to 15 October 2004) noted that, in the interval between 1 January 2005 and 1 January 2007 (date of the expected entry into force for the revised MARPOL Annex I and its updated IOPP Certificate Supplement), there is no provision for indicating approval in the current form of the IOPP Certificate Supplement for equipment approved under resolution MEPC.107(49) or resolution MEPC.108(49).

  3 MEPC 52, noting the precedent set out in Unified Interpretation 2.4A of the existing MARPOL Annex I, agreed that Administrations may make interim corrections, when necessary, in sections 2.4.1 and 2.4.3 of both Forms A and B of the IOPP Certificate Supplement as regards equipment approved in accordance with resolution MEPC.107(49), or in section 6.1.4 of Form B of the Supplement as regards equipment approved in accordance with resolution MEPC.108(49), pending the entry into force on 1 January 2007 of the revised MARPOL Annex I and its updated IOPP Certificate Supplement.

  4 Member Governments are invited to bring this circular to the attention of interested parties including port State control officers.
