3.5 Ballast Water Convention:

(1) The Ballast Water Management Convention will probably not enter into force before the first implementation date for ballast water treatment systems (i.e. 01 January 2009 for ships with a ballast water capacity of less than 5,000m3).

(2) This implies that ships constructed after 01 January 2009 and having ballast capacity of less than 5000m3 will not have to install treatment systems on these vessels until their second annual surveys, but not later than 31 December 2011.
