Section 1 Purpose of new construction surveys

1.1 Special Survey under construction

1.1.1 Vessels built in accordance with LR’s Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Naval Ships (hereinafter referred to as the Rules for Naval Ships), or in accordance with requirements equivalent thereto, will be eligible to be assigned class upon satisfactory completion of LR’s Special Survey.

1.1.2 Classification will be conditional upon compliance with LR’s requirements and any additional requirements that may be delegated by the Naval Authority.

1.1.3 The purpose of a Special Survey under construction is to ensure that:

  • the vessel is built in accordance with the approved plans and that the arrangements, materials and workmanship are satisfactory and in accordance with the appropriate Rules for Naval Ships; and
  • that all the required associated tests and trials are carried out with satisfactory results.

It is the duty of the Surveyors to ensure, from the commencement of work until the completion, that the foregoing is complied with.

1.1.4 Any items found not to be in accordance with the Rules for Naval Ships or the approved plans, or any material, workmanship or arrangements found to be unsatisfactory, are to be brought to the attention of the Builder who will rectify them to the satisfaction of the attending Surveyor.

1.2 Optional Surveys

1.2.1 Where authorized by a Naval Authority to undertake the Initial Survey for the issue of a Statement of Compliance, it is the duty of the Surveyor to ensure, from the commencement of work until completion, that the necessary work required by the relevant standards is completed satisfactorily.
