Section 6 Refits or Alterations and Additions (As & As)

6.1 Major alterations

6.1.1 Major alterations of existing ships are generally considered to be instances which:

  1. substantially alter a ship’s dimensions or capacity;

  2. change a ship’s type or primary function;

  3. substantially increase a ship’s service life;

  4. substantially affect the sub-division; or

  5. substantially affect the watertight and weathertight integrity.

6.1.2  A ‘Request for Services’ (Form 2508), together with a scope of the work to be undertaken, are to be submitted to the LR Naval liaison office as soon as possible, and in all cases before work is commenced.

6.1.3  Effective co-ordination of all classification requirements is essential and is to be controlled by the local office with contract reviews conducted strictly in accordance with Corporate Quality Procedures. In this respect, it will be necessary for the Regional/Country Manager to nominate a Local Project Manager to undertake co-ordination and control responsibilities.

6.1.4  It is particularly important that all aspects requiring plan approval are identified at an early stage and controlled thereafter. Work undertaken by Plan Approval Offices is sent direct to the Local Project Manager.

6.2 Minor alterations

6.2.1 Minor alterations are defined as those which do not involve significant changes to the structure of the ship but which may have an impact on structural strength.

6.2.2 Minor alterations should be brought to the attention of the local Surveyor or the LR Naval liaison office.

6.2.3 Normally minor alternations can be approved locally and reported as hull repairs. However, where doubt exists as to the structural impact of changes, particularly where military notations are affected, advice is to be sought from the appropriate Plan Approval office.

6.2.4 Minor defects may be the subject of a standard repair as detailed in Ch 13 Fractures, Ch 14 Distortion and deformation and Ch 15 Repairs, or a typical defect for that ship type which will be detailed in the survey record documentation on board.
