Section 5 Lifting appliances affecting classification

5.1 General

5.1.1 The connections of the RAS positions to the deck and/or house structure should be carefully examined for evidence of potential failure.

5.1.2 The deck connections of cranes, gantries etc. together with the deck reinforcement and structure of crane pedestals in way should be examined for significant defects. The initial visual examination may be supplemented by dye penetrant or magnetic particle NDT methods as appropriate, if considered necessary. Fractured welds may be cut out and rewelded ensuring full penetration as a permanent repair. An increase in the stiffening of supporting structure may be necessary to prevent re-occurrence.

5.1.3 Where authorised, Lifting Appliance Surveys may be carried out by LR at the direction of the Naval Authority. The details of survey will depend on the Code or Standard applicable.

5.1.4 Aircraft lifts and ro-ro ramps must be examined for structural integrity where they are part of the description or notation relating to the ship type.
