Section 3 Assignment of Class

3.1 Plan Approval/Appraisal

3.1.1 Before building commences, LR will examine the following, submitted by the Builder/designer, for approval:

  • Plans and associated information.
  • Related technical descriptions and data, including materials as detailed in the Rules.

3.1.2 After examination, LR will advise the Builder/designer as to whether the design of the intended ship, as submitted, is acceptable or, where appropriate, will indicate those modifications necessary to meet classification requirements.

3.2 Surveys

3.2.1 When a ship is built under survey, LR will verify:

  • that the design and scantlings satisfy the Rule requirements and are in accordance with approved plans and that the correct materials are used;
  • that the materials and components used have been certified in accordance with the Rules;
  • that the work is carried out to the satisfaction of the Surveyor and in accordance with the Rules, and in accordance with good shipbuilding practice;
  • that the functional tests are carried out satisfactorily to the extent and in the manner prescribed in the Rules.

3.3 Interim Certificate

3.3.1 When the Surveyor carrying out the survey is satisfied that the requirements specified for the class in question have been met, an Interim Certificate will be issued which is valid for the period stated and until LR has confirmed the class and issued the Classification Certificate.
