Section 4 Retention of Class

4.1 Periodic Classification Surveys

4.1.1 A classed ship is to be subjected to the following periodic classification surveys with the frequency specified in the Regulations:

  • Annual Surveys.
  • Intermediate Surveys.
  • Docking/In-water Surveys.
  • Special Surveys.

4.2 Incidents affecting class

4.2.1 Any damage, defect or breakdown, which could invalidate the conditions for which a class has been assigned, is to be reported to LR without delay.

4.3 Unscheduled surveys

4.3.1 A classed ship will be subjected to a survey independently of Periodic Classification Surveys when:

  • it has sustained damages to its hull, machinery or equipment to such an extent as is considered to affect its class;
  • it undergoes conversions/modifications to its hull, machinery or equipment, the extent of which is considered to affect its class;
  • it undergoes repairs of damages/defects recorded at a survey, but deferred for correction within a certain period of time.
