Section 4 Fireman's outfits

4.1 Components

4.1.1 A fireman's outfit is to consist of:

  1. Personal equipment comprising:

    1. Protective clothing of material to protect the skin from the heat radiating from the fire and from burns and scalding by steam. The outer surface is to be water-resistant.

    2. Boots and gloves of rubber or other electrically non-conducting material.

    3. A rigid helmet providing effective protection against impact.

    4. An electric safety lamp (hand lantern) of an approved type with a minimum burning period of three hours.

    5. An axe with an insulated handle.

  2. A self-contained breathing apparatus of an approved type. The volume of air contained in the cylinders of which is to be at least 1200 litres or other self-contained breathing apparatus which is to be capable of functioning for a period of at least 30 minutes. Spare bottles are to be provided which are to be maintained fully charged except where facilities for re-charging the bottles are available on board. At least two spare charges for each breathing apparatus are to be provided, and all air cylinders for breathing apparatus are to be interchangeable.

4.1.2 For each breathing apparatus a fireproof life-line of sufficient length and strength is to be provided capable of being attached by means of a snaphook to the harness of the apparatus or to a separate belt in order to prevent the breathing apparatus becoming detached when the life-line is operated.
