Section 2 Public address system levels

2.1 The minimum sound pressure levels produced by speakers for broadcasting emergency announcements with the ship underway in moderate weather shall be:

  • 75 dBA and at least 20 dB above the speech interference level in interior spaces
  • 80 dBA and at least 15 dB above the speech interference level on open decks.

2.2 The minimum sound pressure levels due to the emergency alarm tone in interior spaces and on open deck with the ship underway in moderate weather should be 80 dBA and at least 10 dBA above ambient noise levels. At bunks and in bathrooms the levels should be the same as required for audible alarms in Ch 9, 1 Audible alarm levels 1.1 .
