Section 1 General

1.1 Application

1.1.1 Requirements for ballast water treatment systems and their installation, where fitted, are given in Pt 5, Ch 25, 1.1 Application of the Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Ships, July 2022, which are to be complied with except where otherwise stated.

1.1.2 Additional requirements with respect to unit types as indicated in this Chapter are also to be complied with, as applicable.

1.1.3 Where it is intended to operate the ballast system bypassing the ballast water treatment system (e.g. lifting operations of heavy-lift crane units which take in and discharge at the same location before repeating at another location), a risk assessment is to be carried out in accordance with IMO Resolution MEPC.162(56) - Guidelines for Risk Assessment Under Regulation A-4 of the BWM Convention (G7) - (Adopted on 13 July 2007). Where ballast systems and tanks which bypass ballast water treatment systems are required to be cleaned between operations, these are to be identified on the plans and their cleaning procedures are to be included in the Operations Manual.
