Section 2 Design accelerations
Clasification Society 2024 - Version 9.40
Clasifications Register Rules and Regulations - Rules for the Classification of Trimarans, July 2022 - Volume 1 Regulations and Structural Arrangements - Part 5 Environmental Loads - Chapter 3 Motion Response - Section 2 Design accelerations

Section 2 Design accelerations

2.1 General

2.1.1 The non-dimensional ship motion acceleration values given in this Section are to be used in the calculation of global and local loads. The equations given here are applicable to ships with trimaran hull forms operating in the displacement mode at their normal ship service speed or cruising speed. Any ships operating in the planing regime are to be specially considered.

2.2 Design accelerations

2.2.1 The heave acceleration, a heave, is to be calculated in terms of g as follows:

Table 3.2.1 Wave height factor, f wv

Complementary Rules Service Area/Group f wv
Ship Unrestricted 1,0
NSR SA1 1,0
  SA2 0,73
  SA3 0,65
  SA4 0,45
  SAR To be specially considered
SSC G1 0,15
  G2 0,25
  G3 0,5
  G4 1,0
  G5 1,0
  G6 1,0

2.2.2 The vertical acceleration due to roll, a rollz, is to be calculated in terms of g as follows:

where
f roll = where f roll should not be taken as less than 1

2.2.3 The vertical acceleration, a z, due to roll and heave, at a position y, is to be calculated as follows:

y is defined in Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 1, 1.4 Symbols and definitions.

2.2.4 The wave head due to relative vertical motion, H rm is to be calculated as follows:

where
H w1 =
H w2 = f wv 0,0771L wl(C b+0,2)0,3 e (-0,0044 L wl)
f Fn =
  • f ld varies according to the type of load being calculated as follows:
= 2,25 for the determination of pressure loads on shell in Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.3 Hydrodynamic wave pressure 2.3.3
= 4,5 for the determination of impact loads on shell and cross-deck in Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.4 Bottom impact pressure and Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.5 Wave impact pressure above waterline
x Fn = 0,45 – 0,65F n where x Fn should not be taken as less than 0,2
F n =
