Clasifications Register Rules and Regulations - Rules for the Classification of Trimarans, July 2022 - Volume 4 Direct Calculation Procedure - Part 1 Direct Calculation Procedure - Chapter 2 Structural Strength Analysis and Verification - Section 1 General

Section 1 General

1.1 Application

1.1.1 The direct calculation of the ship's structural response is to be based on a three-dimensional (3-D) plate finite element analysis carried out in accordance with this Chapter. Where alternate procedures are proposed, these are to be agreed with LR before commencement.

1.1.2 A detailed report of the calculations is to be submitted and must include the information listed in Vol 4, Pt 1, Ch 2, 1.2 Global strength analysis and verification report. The report must demonstrate compliance with this procedure.

1.1.3 LR may, in certain circumstances, require the submission of computer input and output to further verify the adequacy of the calculations carried out.

1.1.4 It is recommended that the designer discuss the requirements with LR at an early stage of the design phase.

1.2 Global strength analysis and verification report

1.2.1 A report is to be submitted to LR for approval of the global hull structure of the ship and is to contain:

  1. Lists of plans used, including dates and versions;

  2. Detailed descriptions of structural model, including all modelling assumptions;

  3. Plots to demonstrate correct structural modelling and assigned properties;

  4. Details of material properties used;

  5. Details of all boundary conditions;

  6. Details of all loading conditions applied including calculated still water shear force (SF) and bending moment (BM) distributions, see also Vol 4, Pt 1, Ch 2, 3.3 Load cases – Local model;

  7. Details of applied loadings and confirmation that individual and total applied loads are correct;

  8. Details of boundary support forces and moments;

  9. Plots and results that demonstrate the correct behaviour of the ship structural models to the applied loads;

  10. Summaries and sufficient plots of global and local deflections;

  11. Summaries and sufficient plots of von Mises, directional and shear stresses to demonstrate that the design criteria contained in this procedure has not been exceeded in any member and to demonstrate that the model behaviour is correct;

  12. Plate buckling analysis and results;

  13. Pillar buckling analysis and results, if applicable;

  14. Tabulated results showing compliance, or otherwise, with the design criteria; and

  15. Proposed amendments to structure where necessary, including revised assessment of stresses and buckling capabilities.
