Section 3 Shell envelope

3.1 General

3.1.1 This Section contains local scantling requirements applicable to the shell envelope. Each applicable sub-Section is to be evaluated to determine the governing scantling requirement as follows:

3.2 Requirements due to design pressures

3.2.1 The scantlings of plating and stiffeners on the shell envelope are to be determined from the general equations given in Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 4, 2 Minimum structural requirements, using the design pressures calculated according to Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 3 Shell envelope.

3.3 Additional minimum requirements

3.3.1 In addition to complying with Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 4, 3.3 Additional minimum requirements 3.3.1, scantling requirements are to be assessed according to Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 4, 3.3 Additional minimum requirements 3.3.2.

3.3.2 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in:

3.3.3 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Naval Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Table 3.2.1 Minimum structural requirements in Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 3 of the Rules for Naval Ships.

3.3.4 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Special Service Crafts then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Table 3.2.1 Minimum thickness requirements in Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 3 of the Rules for Special Service Craft.

3.4 Single bottom

3.4.1 The requirements of this sub-Section are applicable to the bottom structure of vessels having a single bottom.

3.4.2 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in:

3.4.3 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Naval Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Vol 1, Pt 3, Ch 2, 3.5 Single bottom structure of the Rules for Naval Ships.

3.4.4 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Special Service Craft then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Pt 6, Ch 4, 5 Single bottom structure and appendages of the Rules for Special Service Craft.

3.5 Double bottom

3.5.1 The requirements of this sub-Section are applicable to the bottom structure of vessels having a double bottom.

3.5.2 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Naval Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Vol 1, Pt 3, Ch 2, 3.6 Double bottom structure of the Rules for Naval Ships.

3.5.3 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in:

3.5.4 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Special Service Craft then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Pt 6, Ch 4, 6 Double bottom structure of the Rules for Special Service Craft.

3.6 Strengthening due to bottom slamming

3.6.1 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Naval Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 3, 1.4 Equivalents of the Rules for Naval Ships using the pressure, IP bi, calculated according to Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.4 Bottom impact pressure. Note that for calculation of h s according to Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 3, 14.2 Strengthening of bottom forward 14.2.8 of the Rules for Naval Ships:

where
= f DLF is to be taken as 1,0.

3.6.2 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Pt 3, Ch 5, 1.5 Strengthening of bottom forward of the Rules for Ships.

3.6.3 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Special Service Craft then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are to be determined from the general equations given in Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 4, 2 Minimum structural requirements, using the design pressures calculated according to Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.5 Wave impact pressure above waterline.

3.7 Slamming above the waterline

3.7.1 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Naval Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 3, 15 Strengthening for wave impact loads above waterline of the Rules for Naval Ships using the pressure, IP wi, calculated according to Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.5 Wave impact pressure above waterline. Note that for calculation of h s according toVol 1, Pt 6, Ch 3, 15.2 Strengthening against bow flare wave impacts 15.2.2 of the Rules for Naval Ships:

where
= f DLF is to be taken as 1,0.

3.7.2 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Ships then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are not to be less than those given in Pt 3, Ch 5, 1.6 Strengthening against bow flare slamming, Pt 4, Ch 2 Ferries, Roll On-Roll Off Ships and Passenger Ships and Pt 4, Ch 8 Container Ships of the Rules for Ships, depending on the particular ship type, using the pressure, IP wi, calculated according to Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.5 Wave impact pressure above waterline. Note that for calculation of h s according to Pt 4, Ch 2 Ferries, Roll On-Roll Off Ships and Passenger Ships of the Rules for Ships:

3.7.3 If the Complementary Rules are the Rules for Special Service Craft then the scantlings of plating and stiffeners are to be determined from the general equations given in Vol 1, Pt 6, Ch 4, 2 Minimum structural requirements, using the design pressures calculated according to Vol 1, Pt 5, Ch 5, 2.5 Wave impact pressure above waterline.
